We Talkin’ ‘Bout Practice

After my last post, I took a break for an hour or so before heading out again.  Not really interested in defensive plexing, but not really on full attack mode either.  I just wandered here and there.  I am frustrated, but I do not want to give up.

I land in Loes, and there are two enemies in system.  I guess I am tilting a bit at this point, because I just warp to the first novice complex I see on the scanner.  Nothing.  Warp to the next… nothing.  Very strange.  I look into the pilots now, and see that they are not LP farmers/bots.  I begin using my d-scan with narrow angle, but I can not find them in system.

Then I notice something that was in my face all along.

FW Missions Welcome Everyone to the Party

Someone is running a mission.  Despite my years of PvE, I am not familiar the mission “A Wolf in the Fold”, but I can see that a Tristan is still in the complex.  This should be interesting.  I warp to the gate, and begin to speculate on what sort of NPCs I may have to run up against as well. 

I gate into the plex, and the Tristan is still there.  Five warrior IIs deployed.  The Tristan is over 40 kms away, so I begin to zoom forward.  There are no NPCs in this pocket, (just a bunch of wrecks), so at least that is not a thing I need to worry about.  As I approach, the Tristan suddenly warps off.  He left all of his drones.  

I scoop up the drones, and loot the wrecks left behind.  I do not know if anything I looted was mission critical, but I do not think so.  Looting the field just fulfills my greedy side, and it helps make me feel victorious somehow.

As I loot more enemy pilots enter system, blinking in local.  I dock to unload the cheap loot I acquired, (more convinced now that I really inspect it that nothing is mission critical), and head back out.  I scan a ship in a novice complex, warp in, and watch him fly off.  I play this game a few more times, and begin to do something I normally do not do – smack talk in local.

As I circle the button in the complex I decide to nest in, it does not take me long to realize that there will not be any takers to my challenge.  Not that I really was expecting any.  Very frustrating.  I scan, but detect nothing in system.  I am at a complete loss as to where these four enemy pilots are.  

Then, more from curiosity than anything else, I scan the mission complex.  There really is no reason a pilot would be in there, since he finished the mission.  ‘Lo and behold, the Tristan is in there.  I figure, “What the hell.”  Falling for a trap is better than this slow death of zooming all around a system hunting cowards.  Away I go.

As I warp in to the complex, the Tristan is still there, and a Heron appears – right on top of me.  From my experience with Alice P Liddel, I already know this Heron is not an explorer fit.  The Heron and I lock each other, and the Tristan scurries off – seems he will not even chance his safety as an observer on the field.  Not much to this battle, since I started at such a disadvantage.

The only lesson I can pull from this combat is the lesson I knew flying into it, “If it looks too good to be true, it is.”  I would not fall into this trap if I was being selective, but this challenge is to help me cope with loss.  It is a bitter pill to swallow though.

Heron PvP Fit

The Heron pilot, Roxanne Valentine, ends up being cool though.  According to the Eve Mails we exchange, she was attempting to hunt LP farmers, came across this complex, and was disconnected.  When she reconnected the Tristan was off at a distance, and I was the closest target.  Normally I would not believe such a coincidence, but like I said she was helpful.  I also like Stay Frosty corporation.  They are fun to have around.  She shared the Heron fit.  

In further conversation, as I asked for advice, she also shared two Tristan fits for me to try out.  One of the fits I knew about, but the neut fit Tristan is something I have heard of.  It will be interesting to fly around and try out.  My commitment to my current fit is set for the next several Tristans, however, as I have already fitted them out in preparation of many more booms.

I asked Roxanne to put in a good word for me with Stay Frosty, and we part ways.  I may look into moving into this corporation eventually.  Unless things change with FW, I just do not see myself staying with this side of Eve.  I like the LP gains, sort of.  I would prefer more value to kills.  Also, the current state of the Gallente/Caldari war is completely dominated by Gallente.  We will see, I still have a while to go with this current challenge.

The next day after work, I hop on, and take to roaming.  After traveling a few systems, I come across an LP farmer/bot, and fly to the complex.  He zips off as I land, and I take to circling the button for a while.  There are several people in system, but I spin around for about five minutes with no takers.  Lynx Artrald enters the system, and I see a Republic Fleet Firetail heading my way on d-scan.  I know these suckers are fast, so I make sure my orbit is at 28 km hoping he lands at a distance.

The Firetail lands at about 10 km from me – good enough.  I had my micro warp drive prepped to overheat, so I target Lynx and hit orbit.  I begin to pull distance as my drones go to work.  Damage is getting through, and I am happy with the progress through the fight.  Then I turn idiot.  I attempt to shut off the overheat on my micro warp drive.  I want the unit to continue to run, but I do not want to burn it out.  The result was me turning off the entire unit.  A detail I did not become aware of, until I saw the Firetail close the distance quickly.  He scrams, neuts, and blasts me in the face now, and runs through my shield quick.

At some point, as I attempt to pointlessly figure out how pull distance without my micro warp drive, I notice that it has become a bit of a race.  Granted it is a race that does not favor me, considering my shields are tankiest part of my ship.  However, the Firetail is in structure, and my drones continue to hammer away.  Pop goes my Tristan.

We exchange good fight in local, and Lynx offers to pod me home.  Accepting his invite, I load up into XQ0016, and away I go again.

Although I fly out into Lowsec space immediately, I am not hunting at this point.  I find a vacant system, and fly to a station with a repair facility.  It really pissed me off shutting down my micro warp drive in that battle.  I feel I could have taken that Firetail out with enough time at a distance.  Even if that is debatable, what is not is the fact that once he scrammed me, my battle was done.

Middle Button to Shut Down Overheating!!!!

I make some runs away from station running the micro warp drive, over heating it, and shutting it down.  The thin green bar above the micro warp drive is fine to prep, when that click has my full attention.  Once in battle, clicking becomes less exact.  I determine clicking the middle, double dash line button just to the right of the capacitor is the way to go.  It is called the overload rack.  If I click on the button, ( it turns green), then click again, (blinking green fades away), it will shut down the overheating only.  I need to keep that micro warp drive on!  I practice this a few times, dock up, repair my damaged modules, and head out to hunt.

Standard scene set up again, I enter system, chase off LP farmer/bot, and begin orbiting the button.  A few pilots enter system as the bot runs off.  A pilot from Stay Frosty and one from the Caldari State pilot draw my attention.  I begin spamming d-scan, waiting for one of these pilots, (my money was on Stay Frosty), to approach.  Time goes by.  The Caldari State pilot leaves system, and then I see a Federation Navy Comet approaching.  I did not notice Triakis Semifasciata enter, but he was looking for a fight.  I know Navy Comets are tough, so I brace myself.  Orbiting at 28 km around the button and prepped my micro warp drive with overheating.

Triakis enters at a distance to my advantage.  I lock him, and click to orbit at 20 km.  Almost all Navy Comets I have seen on ZKillboard were blaster fit, so I believed distance was necessary for my survival.  Once distance was set and my drones were going to work on him, I shut overheating off – as I practiced. 

I wish I could say things went smooth from here on out.  In this battle, I struggled to control range.  I looked up, and he started closing in on me.  I overheat micro warp drive to extend distance, shut it off, and see that he was beyond my warp disruptor’s range.  I begin to manage the few modules I have, overheating micro warp drive and/or disruptor, to gain speed and/or extend the distance to lock him.  I began to get more panicked each time I lost lock, as I started to see a real opportunity to win the fight.

Through this flurry of attention distractions, I catch a glimpse of red, and see that Triakis has begun to beat up on my drones.  I recall one, deploy two, and so on from there.  Each time looking at my distance to keep point established on him.

14th Kill

We exchange “gf” in local.  It was a good fight, but I am not sure I fought it as smooth as it might have been fought.  Triakis tells me in local that he is new to this, and just trying to get used to PvP.  I confess I am as well.  I also complimented him on staying in the fight.  There were several opportunities for him to warp off to save his ship.  He was committed to stay in the fight though!

I scoop up the loot, and head back to my home station to drop off, and to repair and replace drones.  Nothing like a win to heal a wounded ego.  There is still so much for me to learn, and I still need to accept loss.  It is inevitable, but I will go down fighting.

Boom Goes My Ships and Ego

Oh my, but I suck at PvP!  Maybe at the game in general.  This little voice is turning out to be my greatest opponent.

Since my last post, I teased myself into believing I might actually be improving.  It started with a condor.  Lovekostb Bur is a pilot for the Caldari State, and he seemed interested in a fight.  I had just finished, (it was secured just as I felt lovekostb may be flying to me), and I was wondering if the gate into the complex would remain after I secured the complex.  Using my d-scan and speculating on lovekostb’s flight pattern, I was guessing he was attempting to locate my direction.

After a minute or two went by, I decided I should just warp to a moon, and attempt to locate him.  As I warped off, the Condor flew into my complex.  Damn!  Well, at least I know he wants to fight.  As soon as I landed from warp, I warped to a small complex.  It took him so long to find my last location, it seems to be the thing to do to let him come to me.  I entered warp away from the moon, and in to the moon flies in the Condor.  DAMN!  

I wait at the complex gate for a few moments, trying to think if I should stay here or just fly into the complex.  Not seeing the Condor getting closer, I wait another few moments, left click on the gate, and just as I’m about to select enter – in warps the Condor.  Okay, let’s fight!

I deploy drones and orbit at 20 km.  I am able to easily pull distance, and my drones go to town on him.  Almost immediately as the fight begins, I know I won.

11th Kill Mail

As I wrap up the fight, I turn my focus to loot the wreck, and I notice another frigate on my overview – a Damavik.  Not recognizing the name, I immediately get startled as I jump to the conclusion this must be a Triglavian ship, and I remember my last interaction with such a ship.

Damavik – Triglavian Frigate

In obedience to my rule, not to run away from a fight, I lock on to Isana Izanagi’s Damavik, and direct my drones to attack as I pull range.  Fortunately, my fight with the Condor helped my range from this Damavik’s warp in location.  I am happily surprised to watch my drones begin to chew away at his ship, causing him to active tank the damage.  I see that he has started to attack a drone, I recall, save it, and deploy a replacement.  He works on a second soon after the first gets out of his weapon range, which I also recall, and deploy a replacement.  I have settled into this routine, as I see that I have distance, my micro warp drive is running but not overheating, and the Damavik does not appear to be able to close the distance.

We dance like this for a while, and it appears my drones are beginning to win over his active tank.  Unfortunately, I run out of capacitor, and lose lock.  Isana uses this opportunity to run away.

The Damavik Pilot – Couldn’t Work Past a Kite Fit

I remain at location for a while.  Half in shock, and half from greed – I needed to loot that Condor wreck.  Isana warps back the complex gate, but he is over 90 km away from my location.  I scoop up my loot, and begin to make my way toward his location.  As I’m about to approach lock range, I deploy my undamaged drones, but he warps off again.  I guess he thought better of  staying to take on a kiting Tristan on my distance terms.

It was getting late that night, and I did not want to play cat and mouse.  I believe I gave him enough chances to take out my T1 frigate with his Triglavian tech, I do not need to actually lay myself out on an alter of sacrifice.  

Although I have some hours of opportunity to fly during the week, I find nothing to fight.  I go on the offense, and just waste time chasing off LP farmers/bots.  I defensive plex, and pilots just ignore me in system. 

The next opportunity to fly around, that provides any sort of action, is this weekend.  It takes me some doing to convince myself to do this, I’m surprised that, although I wanted to play Eve, I just did not seem to be in the mood for this.  Believing it was just pessimism over the lack of activity in the last few sessions, I convince myself to push out of the station.

I make a short attempt to roam to look for fights, but again all I do is annoy a few LP farmers/bots as I have to draw their attention away from looking at their bank statements.  I begin defensive plexing.  Another Tristan comes into system, and flies toward my complex.  I prepare for the fight, and mentally begin to form the strategy to take out his drones.  When he flies in, I pull distance.  My drones immediately act in defense as he locked and fired on me before I could target his drones.  The drones begin to rip through his shields.  I do not let that distract me, since in my mind all that does is confirm he is armor tanked.  I direct my drones to attack his.  This takes much longer than I expected.  I go through two of his drones, as he finishes my shields.  At this point, I know the battle is done.

XQ0011 Kill Mail

After a little research on ZKillboard, I can see that he was equipped with 125mm Prototype Gauss Guns, loaded with Caldari Navy Tungsten Chages, (adding 40% more range on his long range equipped guns).  Considering he was also equipped with tech II transverse bulkhead rigs, this battle was just not going to end well for me.  Perhaps, if I manually piloted to extend transversal advantage to decrease incoming damage from his gauss guns as I take out his drones?  Maybe.  It would be tough, if there was a way.

Ed Cetera gives me a “gf” in local, and I return the sentiment.  He offers me a compliment in taking out his drones.  I get a bit salty here, and mumble, “Not really,” as I believe I should have been able to take out more.  That, and any inconvenience I may have created for him is minimized as I just left him plenty of replacements for this ship and future ships.  I state this fact in local, with a “:)” as an attempt to not sound as salty, but I have to admit my ego was stinging.  Not Ed’s fault, he was great, and fought well!

I was too into my head, I just went on automatic.  After the combat I immediately warp away, and I realized I have a long trip home.  Pod express next time, just stay and take it.  Along the way I realize I am really letting this get to me.  I force myself to jump into XQ0012, and fly away – forgetting the detail of insurance by the way.  Another habit I have to form.

I set course to a system with the largest contested percentage, and begin to look for opportunities along the way.  I would rather run into something than defensive plex, but if I have to defend a complex I want the LP value to be high.

Within the system before my destination system, I chase off an LP farmer/bot from a novice complex.  I take some time spinning around the button.  The complex was close to completion, and I needed to take a break from just flying system to system.  As I orbit these buttons, I have taken up the strategy of setting the orbit range to 28 km.  I have noticed this seems to decrease the opportunities for these brawlers to come in and randomly appear on my face.

An Imperial Navy Slicer enters the system.  It does not take long for the pilot to locate me, and head into my novice complex.  The point of entry distance is perfect for my kiting strategy, but this ship is built for speed, Shade Anid equipped it for even more speed.  The Slicer just overtakes my overheated micro warp drive fueled velocity, and begins to beat me up.  He is so fast, my drones struggle to damage him – speed tank here.  Although I had two Warriors deployed, I think for these ships I need the full compliment to have a chance to damage him.  Anyway, he makes short work of me, and my uninsured XQ0012 goes boom.

XQ0012 Kill Mail

At least this Rogue Caldari Union pilot does not need to fly around in a herd.  Doesn’t communicate with me at all, no “gf” or anything.  The impression I have developed of members within this young alliance is that they are just… bullies (for lack of a better term).  They seek to win at all costs, and probably avoid anything that look like a challenge.  This is a valid strategy, but I think a strategy that develops weak pilots.  Maybe continued experience with them will disprove my initial impression.  We’ll see if these pilots and alliance will continue to show strength when they inevitably face a challenge or threat.  Maybe this is not as much of a factor in low sec as it is in high sec.

The increase value of this ship is from the loot I was able to scoop up from an random wreck I found on my travels.  Would have been nice to keep, but I forgot to dock up and dump it off at a random station.  Of course this strategy begs the question, am I really going to go around and clean up these random loot caches I create?  We will see what I can come up with in this struggle to make this activity profitable – or at least minimize the cost.

Again, I forget to stay and get podded, (something I know a Rogue Caldari Union member will do), warping off in my pod for a long trek back to my home station.  If I am honest, at this point my ego is just screaming.  I want to do better, and this fight did not even allow me to delude myself into believing, “I might have won if…”  Ultimately, I know there are ships, if flown by a competent pilot – which Shade is, I will not be able to win against with this T1 fit Tristan.  I think I am aware of this.  There is this nag in my head that just wants to, at minimum, put up enough of a fight to place a scare, or excitement, into my opponent.

12th Kill

I call this one, “I can’t be a bot, I’m in an Incursus.”  This is where I may be developing into a bit of a prick.  After the Incursus goes boom, I lock up Tofi’s pod with my warp disruptor.  I loot the wreck, as I normally do, and keep her locked.  I take position in orbiting the button for a bit, while continuing to keep point on the pod.  In my defense, I am waiting for any text to appear in local, or direct message invite, from her.  If I received any sign of life, I would have removed my lock, and allowed her to fly off.  No such communication was attempted, so I just maintained that lock until she slow boated her way out of my disruptor’s range.  This boredom/annoyance inspired action is what I have come to.

For any reader that may be looking for ideas on how to gather kill marks on their ships, I have developed an anti-LP farmer/bot strategy.  It really is not that devious, just thought I would share to inspire others to help swat away these nuisances. 

I equipped my alt with a PvP fit Astero, cloak and all.  Fly into a novice complex, manually double click down or up into space, and give one pulse to your micro warp drive.  It will take some distance to begin to show ANY distance from the complex beacon.  Once you see a distance greater than 2500 m, stop and cloak.  Let the fishing begin.

Once your bot/prey enters system, it will not detect you in the complex, so it will timidly approach.  I wait for the bot to engage in a fight with the NPC frigate, approach cloaked.  Ready to hit your micro warp drive when you hit 2500 m from the beacon – as this will uncloak you.  As soon as you do uncloak, race toward the ship, lock, and just destroy.  

I have not had one of these farmers/bots escape this trap.  Again, this is just fishing.  I found it best to just have my alt sit in this trap while I play.  When I hear the sound of combat, I shift my attention to the alt.  Free kill mark, and another victory against bots won.  I will not continue this action, however.  The faction hits are not good for my industrialist and trader.

Anyway, back to my challenge.  I again travel along a set direction based on high contested percentage.  One jump away from my destination, I enter a system with a Caldari State pilot flying a Tristan.  He is attempting to secure a large complex, so I get kind of excited about not running into an LP farmer/bot.  I land in the complex, and the pilot flies off, and out of system.  I am now alone in the system, frustrated, and now just looking to work off the remaining time to this large complex, (as I see that it is below the 20 minutes default).

Normally I do not care about completing these complexes when it comes to a fight, but this one was frustrating.  I was less than a minute away from collecting a juicy LP reward from this large complex when Meredudd in his Retribution enters system, and heads my way.  Of course!

XQ0013 Kill Mail

Meredudd knows how to pilot a Retribution.  I have the distance on him, but I do not believe this was a much of a concern against his beam lasers.  He was able to get the damage in on me, but it took him some time.  I was orbiting, and this must have made it tougher for his lasers to hit.  Lasers struggle with tracking.  I may have been able to optimize this more to my advantage if I implemented a manual pilot strategy to increase transversal.  That will be something I have to look into, and get used to.

I think this little fight was rougher than Meredudd expected though.  As I said, it took him a while to work through my shields.  My drones made short work of his shields, and began to bite into his armor.  That’s when the damage just stopped!  I could not get any more damage through from that point on, nothing.  I attempted to locate his fit through ZKillboard, but he has not lost a Retribution, so I have to resort to the little experience I have, that battle with Balzaque in his Retribution a few weeks back.  That battle took a while too, and I remember there was a period in that fight that my damage came to a halt.  Balzaque had pulse lasers equipped, so in that battle time and distance were just not his friends.

As I stated in my reflection from the fight with Balzaque, I imagine this damage halt was the work of an equipped Assault Damage Controll II unit.  When it is activated it increases damage resistance by 75% for 15 seconds!  First, this damage negation period seemed much longer than 15 seconds, but in frigate fights time is subjective.  Second, wow!  When implemented effectively this is crippling for my offense.  Mental note here, if this is in effect, I will be sure to apply resources to other targets during this time – like drones.  In the case of a Retribution, no drones.

Meredudd never went after my drones, he just kept trying to close the distance – probably to assist his laser tracking.  After I popped, I again fly away in my pod, we exchange “gf” in local.  Meredudd states that he burned out a few of his mods in this fight.  I interpret that to indicate the fight surprised him, and distracted his attention from his regular routines.  This is a victory, and I am happy about it.  It was a good experience with a cool pilot.  However, I still feel a bit disgruntled as I make my long way home for another ship.

Maybe this weekend I am just not in the right head space.  Again, I force myself into XQ0014, insure it, and anchors away.

As I make my way through systems implementing the routines I have begun to form, I  reflect on what is bothering me.  The question is answered by a not so surprising source.  Oh look, another LP farmer/bot.

13th Kill

These kills just do not impress me any more.

I am worried that I am not improving.  Am I just killing plush targets, just to explode under the guns of better pilots?  It’s not for lack of trying.  I am not avoiding or attempting to select prime targets.  That is the worry that is nagging at me.  These articles of bots ruining the game, concerns over Eve dying, and my experience with games that I love eventually dying is kind of dragging me down.  Most likely, I am probably not in a very good mental head space this weekend.  Stress at work, holidays, yadda yadda…  I need to push all this aside, and just enjoy the moments.  Continue to learn, and stop being so emo.

Now This, …This is What I Expected

I have been in a slump.  Defensive plexing just does not gather the action I believed.  Maybe it depends on the time of day.  However, I do believe I have been too conservative in my approach.  Thus, slightly drifting away from my goal to explode through 100 ships.  Of course I do want to gain experience, but when I am flying around things are just too slow.

This weekend I had the opportunity to play for a few hours.  Starting with defensive plexing, I again hit a slow period.  I decided to roam and look for attack opportunities.  Within the first few systems I entered, I was lingering at gate as an Amarr Crusader warped in.  

Lately, I have read several articles and posts of people complaining about bots infesting our FW systems.  As I looked into the experience of the pilot, I saw what I have come to expect from an LP farmer – very limited time logged under experience.  After hesitating on gate for longer than I should, I decided to head to the novice complex, since I was willing to bet that would be where he flew.  When I landed I was about to use the gate to warp into the complex, but then on my overview I saw an Atron warping to my location.  I deployed drones, clicked to target, and prepped my warp disruptor.  When the Atron completed warp, I locked and attacked.

10th Kill

Another LP farmer off the grid.  This time I did not pod, since I’ve determined that just allows him to get into a ship faster to continue his money grind.  Notice the 19 loyalty points for me though!  Fortunately with my drone fit, I am not wasting money on these kills.  I have learned not to overhead with these encounters either, again just a waste of ISK for repairs.

This encounter causes me concern about the botting accusations I read about.  I do see the same pilots resorting to these tactics, and I see the same patterns.  I do not know how to program such bots, but I have to imagine the AI may have some limitations.  As I fly into a complex, the pilot leaves.  They stay in system for a moment, fly back to the gate to the novice complex I now occupy, and remain there for several moments.  This pattern is not from all pilots I have run off, but the majority of these cheap Atron fits do follow the pattern.  It almost seems to me the pilot returns to the complex gate in an attempt to run me off.  Sort of like an anti-bot, LP farming bot.

Anyway, giving a big “Whatever,” to that issue, I continued my hunt.  I end up in Heydieles system, and see that there are a number of pilots – a Caldari militia member among them.  The novice complex is out of reach for my narrow d-scan attempt, but at this point I’m willing to just commit and fly to the complex.  As I approach, an Atron is on scan, so I figure all is running according to my “shoo away LP farmer” plan.  I enter complex, but the Atron is not able to fly off before I establish lock and point.  I lock him, deploy drones, and… begin taking damage???

Burntime is not a Caldari Militia pilot obviously.  Good farming for fights strategy here!  He was on top of the complex button, and as an Atron was able to lock me up quickly for his guns to go to work on my shields.  His warp scrambler would not allow me to pull any distance.  I am happy to say that I was not too shaken by this surprise.  My drones got out according to plan, and I established point from my disruptor.  It was a close fight, with his Atron bleeding into hull damage before I exploded. 

This fight also liberated me from another nag in the back of my head – implants.  Burntime podded me, as he locked and scrammed me very quickly.    Not that I hesitated in grid for very long, but apparently body hunting is important to Burntime.  I was podded before being able to respond to his “gf” in local.  

When Quin Fidel was created, I roamed a bit to defensive plex, but as I said in one of my first posts I was not committed to the idea of combat and loss – running from engagements.  I put Quin on a shelf for over a year.  Before doing so, I did stick several cheap implants into his head.  I did not want to give up on the idea of making him my FW character, and I figured he could use the boost to skill training time.  It was a good use of the down time, and I got a lot of use out of the implants.  They are gone now.  The nagging worry of losing them is now gone too.  I think this may have been a factor in my decisions for roaming.  I did not want to stray too far from my home base, due to pod travel time.

XQ0008 away!  I continue to roam.  Immediately chasing off three LP farmers from their complexes, but no kills.  The final farmer, gets me to settle into the complex to work off the time he collected.  He was less than a minute from securing the complex.  I needed to review a few industry orders on my alt’s screen, so I could just spin in the complex, (I was the only pilot in system), and keep an eye on local for any possible threats entering system.

As I focused back on Quin, since he had less than a minute to secure this complex, I noticed a call for help in the militia channel.  Someone asked for support in Nennamaila.  I probably could have asked for more details, but I do not really trust this channel too much.  I figured this could be a trap, or I could be a really nice guy to attempt support.  Anyway the complex secures, and I head off to Nennamaila – just two jumps off.

I jump into system, and there is a whole lot of blinking from several in local.  There are several members of the Rogue Caldari Union alliance in system, and they are generally the flashy pilots.  They are not Faction Warfare, but seem to have fun at FW militia members’ expense.  I know this, as I encountered three of them at the gate leading to the novice complex.

XQ0008 Kill Mail

Not much to write about here.  The Stiletto gained a quick lock on me, and the Garmur and Magus just went to town.  I have to say that I was not too surprised to see this at the gate.  I was expecting a trap of some kind, just not out outside of the gate.  What I learned was that once point is established on my ship, I cannot access the gate into the complex.  Do not fret, I tried to use the complex gate not in an attempt to run away – necessarily.  I was actually hoping the Garmur would jump into the complex to balance out the odds a bit.  Anyway, I am glad I learned this detail, for in the future it will be a detail that will serve well.  I am curious if this is the case for both scrambler and disruptor.  I could have sworn I locked and pointed a few LP farmers outside of a complex, and yet they were able to fly off.  If anyone reading knows details, I would appreciate clarification – as well as any advice in general to offer me in any of my experiences.

A part of me wonders if this crew is simply fishing for LP farmers.  It would be an interesting little trap.  After checking their record on ZKillboard I see that they are just accumulating kills through this gang roam strategy.  Minus the roam, since their strategy seems to be to farm one system for any and all gank opportunities.  I’m podded here, jump into XQ0009, and I’m off again.

The last attempt to run in and hero the day inspires me to to level up my aggression.  I just do not feel like defensive plexing today.  I access the FW map, locate a system controlled by the Caldari, set destination, and warp there as fast as I can.  I head into Ishomilken, and see that it is busy.  Several Caldari pilots are in system.  In an attempt to control any possible fight, I fly into a novice complex.  More time goes by than I expected before I see any possible threat on d-scan – a Dramiel.  All other pilots are flying shiney T2 frigates or larger ships.

Using d-scan to identify the Dramiel is most likely is heading to my complex, I switch out a few of my Hobgoblin drones for Warriors to exploit what I believed may be his ship’s lowest resistance, explosive damage.  My later investigation into the Dramiel proved this was the right move.  Although I was orbiting the button at 19 km, Dauros warped right on top of me – as he, I’m sure, was pleased to see.  Despite my attempt to distance myself, the ensuing brawl favored him.  I was not able to put a lot of attention into velocity and other such details.  I was too busy attempting to pull distance.  I believe I got him into structure, however, before XQ0009 went boom from under me.  It seems once the distance war is won and my ship is warp scrambled, the battle is just finished for me.

XQ0009 Kill Mail

We exchange “gf” in local, and he pods me back to my home station.  XQ0010 online, and away.

Some time during the previous events, another message comes over the militia channel, we are about to lose Hikkoken.  I set course, and rush in to help.  

Once again, I see a large number of pilots, and not many are militia.  My d-scan again shows a large number of T2 frigates and larger running around.  I see a novice complex, narrow d-scan, determine there are no surprises waiting, and warp to 10 km.  I deploy my drones, and begin to orbit the button – killing the faction NPC spawns as they pop up.  

The system is swarming with blingy, expensive ships.  Through d-scan, I can tell my presence is gaining interest.  I notice this system is also being camped by the Rogue Caldari Union alliance, as some members are excitedly zooming here and there, and some accidental slips in chatter appear in local.  Such as, “Is the Tristan in the novice plex?”  

Smooth crew there.

I see a Tristan approach my complex.  And prep for what I believe will soon be a gang of gankers invading my plex to add to their kill board.  To my surprise TWAN Casaille is not apart of the gankers.  His active armor fit Tristan was also armed with a nosferatu.  Once again, he pops in right on top of me.  He does not have a warp scrambler, so I am able to use my micro warp drive to pull some distance.  He has a micro warp drive as well, and we begin to dance this way as I try to find a balance of pulling distance, keeping my signature radius down, and capacitor economy under the strain the nosferatu depletion.

Hindsight note here, I should have went to work on his drones early on.  Learning the same lesson here as some of my past opponents.  He was not engaged in drone management, and I think I may have taken him – maybe – if I immediately took out some of his drones.

XQ0010 Kill Mail

A review of ZKillboard shows the TWAN normally flies with an Ishkur, but must have hopped into his Tristan just to pay me a visit.  Awww!

While conducting my ZKillboard reflection, I also notice a kill credit under my name.  Seems TWAN could not escape the Rogue Caldari Union swarm that was so excited to add another notch on their ZKillboard record.  I notice that TWAN did not have any cap boosters in his inventory.  His dual armor repairer fit must chew through capacitor.  I’ll take some credit for going through those.  

For the record, I am not counting TWAN as a kill.

I have boarded XQ0011, but not launched yet.  I have to log and re-group my mind.  This last chain of losses has sort of tweaked my ego a bit.  I know it is silly, but for years I believed I just suck at PvP.  Rationally I know it is something that takes practice to get better at, and yet something about this game brings out the worst in my loss averse nature.  Ego maybe?  The kills are inspirational.  I don’t know.  I like the fact that I’m committing to this, but hope the sting of loss does decline.  I need to be less focused on kill to loss ration, and just keep focused on gaining experience over anything else.

All’s Quiet On the FW Front

I have been away at a conference.  I would like to say that I have been away at a conference since my last post, but no.  I have managed to get in some playing time as well.  Although I brought a computer with me to the conference, each night after the conference business the wireless connection I had access to was just too laggy to play.  Disappointing.  I really could have used boom-boom time to distract from the tedium of the days.

The nights I have been able log on and roam have been disappointing.  I have been true to my word – ready to fight.  At first I attempted to stay in novice and small complexes.  I have enjoyed the opportunities to the 1v1 fights I have encountered so far.  Diving into defending complexes have been the most successful to gaining fights.  Chasing LP farmer, not so much.  

Brand new, shiney Exoplanets paint-job

Not finding anyone to take me up on my defensive position, I moved to medium and large complexes.  Still no takers.  On d-scan I see opportunities, but the inhabitants of low sec just do not seem interested in a fight, or even a kill for that matter.  As I circled around the button for a large complex, I d-scan watched a Tengu sit outside an NPC station.  I bolstered myself to keep to my pledge and not run should he fly in, but alas he eventually flew out of the system.  

The most excitement I encountered within the nights of roaming and plexing would be at a novice complex.  I flew into a crowded system, (when I say crowded I mean about 12 pilots in system), and I immediately identify two Caldari State pilot in system.  I note that the names sounded unimaginative/non-descript and there was an Atron on d-scan, so I immediately bolt to the novice complex in system – thinking there has to be an LP farmer here that I might catch.  At this point, I don’t even care to narrow my d-scan to confirm the Atron is in the small complex.  I just want action.  As I fly to the complex, I am able to confirm the Atron pilot is sitting in the complex.

As I warp onto the gate leading to the complex, a Caldari Navy Hookbill, piloted by one of the Caldari State pilots, warps in just after I land.  I get excited!  Screw the Atron, here’s the fight.  For a split second I think this may have been some sort of trap, but I do not care – just fight.  I deploy drones, and click to orbit the gate before the Hookbill has the chance to completely land.  I plan to click and orbit his ship as soon as I can establish lock.  The Hookbill comes out of warp, I target, begin to orbit, and just as I am about to command the drones to attack as lock is established – the Hookbill warps off…  What?!?

Now I kind of kick myself for not clicking the warp disruptor.  Kind of.  I do need to get in that habit.  However, in this case I thought this pilot was looking for a fight.  I thought I would have a few moments before I needed to get that disruptor action going.  I chose unwisely.  I narrowed my d-scan width to detect within the complex, and, of course, the Atron pilot flew off.

Tonight I hit over 200,000 LPs.  I did not really track how many LPs my current Tristan is responsible for earning, but I think it is safe to say that it has more than paid for itself.  My minimum LP gain for defensive plexing has been over 3,000 LPs for a novice complex.  My experience in the past has established that at least 2,000 ISK can be earned per LP, so using the above approximate numbers it is safe to say that defensively completing one novice complex is worth 6,000,000 ISK.  That is a conservative figure, in my opinion.

Tens of thousands of LPs of work wear on paint-job.  Alas, no kill marks.

In a future post, I’ll review the cost to acquire a Tristan and outfit it for FW.  Just in case anyone feels inspired to take such a challenge.  I will offer strategies to keep the cost low.  If action, or inaction, such as the last several nights continues to be uneventful, the future blog post may be the next one.  

Considering my motivation to take on this challenge, I am not disappointed.  I actually enjoy the fact that I was getting excited for the opportunity of a fight.  I have not even gone through ten ships, and already I have grown as a player.  I do kick myself for not doing something like this earlier – much earlier.  My assumption was that I would be ganked by roaming gangs more often than not, or crash into several gate camps.  Previously piloting through systems in FW space, I assumed the Caldari and Amar faction pilots in system were the most ballsy pilots around, not to be taken lightly.  Those assumptions are fading.  

Coincidentally, I have read several articles bemoaning the lack of pilots in Low Sec space, and/or criticizing FW.  There is concern over the number of bots, and call to revamp the current FW system in place.  Although it is too early for me to make such calls, the only thing I will chime in on is the incentive, or lack of, to destroy enemy faction ships.  If PvP is to be encouraged, then there needs to be more incentives to fight.  I have destroyed several LP farmer Atrons, and my LP reward for any one of them has not broken 100 LPs.  I realize these ships were not expensive, and the reward is based on ship value.  But… damn!  If you consider the opportunity cost to their strategy,  the LP farmer is justified with their spin and run tactic.

Adjustments to Get Me Wrecked

I’m back to work, so my playing time is once again limited.  One of my purposes with this blog is to provide me more incentive to just get out there and stick it out.  Commit to blowing things up, and/or getting blown up.  

I have to admit, there are times I just don’t feel like I’m in the mood.  Not that I don’t want to fly, but the risk of losing does weigh heavy on my mind.  Really, this risk averse thing is not just a gimmick.  The embarrassment of losing or making the mistake that cost you the combat has a way of just hovering over you, a specter of doubt that hinders you from undocking.  

My objective is to move past that, and improve.

XQ0006 kill mail

Ungh, this combat…  I was so bad.  

In my continuous pursuit to combine work and Eve, I have taken to spinning in a faction warfare complex in vacant systems.  It’s sort of like fishing.  When a pilot pops into system, I direct my attention to checking out the pilot’s history, and spamming d-scan.

An interesting point of note here, I have reconfigured the windows to my screen.  In other words I have moved my overview down, and the ship movement quick buttons closer to the bottom of the screen in an attempt to minimize mouse movement.  I am also attempting to get used to the keyboard button controls when possible.  All this needs time and experience to become familiar with the set up, and develop the muscle memory.

Another key component to my change is radial velocity.  I have added the column to my overview.  In an attempt to analyze my losses, I have determined that I spend too much time obsessing over the distance marker just below the target circle.  Radial velocity gives me a faster report when the target is gaining on my, by indicating a negative number.  A positive number, of course, indicates the target is moving away.  I recalled this column in my previous reading and viewings of PvP combat, and after some refresh research added it to my overview.

I think it was my fixated attention to this overview that distracted me from other key points that I have been getting better at, and in fact I was in control of in this combat.  I had the Hookbill at a good distance, drones chomping away.  As he pulled away, I adjusted, and then quickly corrected to maintain an extreme distance.  He was obviously passive shield tanked, so once I got through 80% of his shields I directed my attention to overview a little more often.  Wrong!

My overview set up accurately communicated that he was gaining on me… quickly.  I went to click the MWD, but it was burned out.  Ah, I forgot to turn the damn thing off from overheating.  Thought I had that down!  Then the color red caught my attention, and I realized he had already destroyed two of my drones, and working on the third.  Gah, just when I thought drone control was an actual strength of mine!  Recall the damaged drone… nope.  Destroyed three of my drones.  Deploy my reserves, and begin putting my whole focus into drone management.  

The good news with him only 1200 meters away from my face, my drones zip into the hanger much faster.  Little by little, after a long time, he kills all of my drones.  He had to completely focus his efforts on targeting and shooting.  Each time he attempted to aim his guns at me, the drones pierced his hull deeper.  In the end, I got him down to 19% hull, but I have NOTHING to hurt him with.  Just a sphere in space serving as target practice.

XQ0006 goes boom, my pod flies away, and we exchange “gf” in local.  Edward Brody is kind enough to offer advice, and really compliments me on the fight.  It was a good fight.  I think this highlights how important it is to have these experiences.  Never fixate on one detail, and never feel like you have the fight in hand.  I need more experience to get these procedures down, and prevent such mistakes.

Fortunately, I have 94 more Tristans, and 9 kills recorded.

Struggling on the Offense

As I said before, I’m over 100,000 LP orbiting the button with defensive complexes for faction warfare.  I feel this is a good way to make ISK, although I haven’t looked into this side of things yet.  I have to say, plexing sites is probably more tedious than mining.  Mining can be a task that runs in the background with just a tenth of your attention.  Spinning around the button demands more attention, much more.  Boring, just boring.  Maybe more accurately, I have to be in the right frame of mind for this.

I have been attempting to mix it up, and roam around looking for targets.  This allows me to practice my pin pointing with d-scan skills, and just run into strange things in low sec here and there.  Mostly I’m chasing off LP farmers.  Atrons seem to be their ship of choice.

Entering these sites to attack has brought new subtle skills to my attention.  I haven’t figured out a procedure for engagement with this yet.  A major disadvantage is I’m potentially entering on the hunted’s terms, as I have used to my advantage in the recent past.  As a kiter, I need to pull distance.  If I’m going against a brawler, as soon as they scram me – I’m done.  Any advice as to how to combat this will be much appreciated.

Just hanging out at the gate

Entering Brarel system, I popped this pod at the gate.  I was pretty sure I would be safe from the gate guns, since we are at war.  I have to say I’m glad my belief was confirmed as I attacked.  At least this was a calculated risk, and not just me getting all excited with blood lust.  Owidasi was one of two Amar pilots in system.  After she went boom, I flew to a planet beyond d-scan range in an attempt to locate the other.

Found an Incursus at a novice site.  He was warping through the complex gate as I approached.  Hindsight, the fact that I d-scanned him at the sight, warped to him, and he then just started to warp into the complex should have set off some alarms in my head.  Although the whole point to this challenge would not have stopped me if alarms did go off, but I do need to develop this sixth sense.  At the time, I thought this was an interesting coincidence.  The fact that this was an Incursus got my hopes up for a combat.  I still held some doubts, since the Incursus’ ship was named [pilot’s name]’s Incursus.  LP farmer’s ship name of choice is the default ship name.  I can’t remember the LP farmer’s name, since my attention was soon interrupted.

XQ0004 goes Boom!

After the LP farmer flew off, I was turning off my overheated modules.  The little sucker got a late start on his warp off – just as I was about to lock.  The moments I took to look over the damage from overheating and to think about docking for repair, I pinged this Heron flying into the complex.  “Alice P Liddell’s Heron” as it appeared on d-scan in fact.  Good news here, pinging d-scan has almost become habitual for me.  Bad news, I did not assume a defensive position while I was thinking – should have hit orbit at 20 km.  I was scrammed immediately.

As soon as I saw Alice flying in, after the Incursus warped off, I felt like a mouse that had just sprung a trap.  My industrialist character roams around this area a lot, and I’m familiar with many of the frequent fliers in these parts – faces and names not necessarily activities.  Alice is a regular in Brarel.  By regular I mean when she is in Brarel, she is there for hours!  The fact that she doesn’t even name her ship, and just happens to be in a Heron set up for PvP… Too much of a coincidence for me.  Checking her kill board shows a similar pattern.  She victimizes faction warriors and explorers.  Although she is not confined to Brarel, that system is definitely her default.

Anyway, Alice’s Heron was an active shield tank.  I attempted to move away from Alice after she pounced.  Double clicking into space, I attempted to create an escape vector to allow an increase in transversal and distance, but I just didn’t have the speed.  I believe my drones surprised her, since they eventually worked past her shields and chewed into her structure.  It was close.  I’m not going to take too much pride in this, since Heron’s are not combat ships.  I’m sure Alice’s  five year old character skills, (as well as a creative combat fit), carried the victory home for her.  

If my suspicion is correct, Alice has a fairly ingenious little system, or trap, here.  Farm LP with her Amar militia alt in a system that is predominantly Gallente, (good income), and occasionally gank  anyone looking for a fight.  Originally I suspected she may have been cloaked up outside of the gate.  This caused me to dive deeper into her Zkillboard history.  Thanks to a Wingspan delivery agent, Sroak Enaka, we have the fit.

Creative bait/trap fit

Wonder how many Navy Cap Booster charges she had left after our little dance?  The fight did go on for some time.  By the by, the Cap Booster in my inventory was just some loot I picked up along my travels.  I’ve been making some spare ISK cleaning up while attempting to find boom boom opportunities.

XQ0005 away!

I returned to the hunt.  I chased off too many Atron pilot LP farmers from their complexes like waving wasps off your BBQ dinner.  I decided to settle in and defend for a while.  May as well make some profit.  

As I was about to complete my third complex, a retribution pilot decided to pay me a visit in my small complex.

This is just the start of the story.

I saw him hovering a long time close to the complex, as I pinged away tracking him.  You could almost see the smoke escaping his ship from his thought process.  He finally committed, and entered.  As per my procedure, I prepped to overload my micro warp drive, and had my drones out.  I locked him, warp disrupted, and hit the micro warp drive to establish a good distance – 22 km.  I knew this might get rough, so I extended my distance out.  I prepared to really track our distance throughout the fight.  I didn’t want him to escape if it went well.

I was getting worried at the beginning.  He burned toward me, and my drones did not seem to be really doing any damage to him.  I know they were on the attack, since I was notified that I took a security hit for initiating the attack, (something I’ll need to work to improve by the way now that I’m negative security status).  I think my trouble doing damage has something to do with the Assault Damage Controll II module.  I do not know much about how this works, just the theory as I read from it’s description.

Finally, as I kept my distance, my drones started to chew through his shields.  He then turned his aggression at my drones.  I began to recall and deploy as they were damaged.  Some did not make it back, but a few had some time to sit in my drone bay to recover shields as its replacement filled in.  During this drone management task, I saw that he was pulling distance away.  I overheated my warp disruptor, and hit the approach key to close some distance.  Recalled drone, deployed drone, and then hit orbit again.  I noticed that I accidentally shut off my disruptor within this time.  I must have accidentally did this in my attempt to stop overheating.  I was able to click it back on before he escaped.  Slowly, working through structure, and finally Boom went the Retribution.

I was AMAZED!  I have to admit, I was also quite pleased with my management of throughout the fight.  The drones went through a battle.

Started with 8 drones, (lost two Hobgoblin IIs)

We exchanged “gf” in local.  Then there was some frustration expressed by Balzaque, and another in system joined in the conversation.

Balzaque hung out in system for a while.  I am not one to smack talk, and I do not like to crow over my wins.  This fight was tough, and I was happy.  After this conversation, I began to feel a little bad that I posted the Kill Mail in local.  I didn’t want Balzaque to feel humiliated.  I also empathized with his pain.  He just lost 55 mil. ISK assault frigate to a t1 Tristan.  I have felt this helpless in previous attempts to dive into PvP – hence my current self tasked challenge.

As I flew back to my home station with my newly acquired loot, I wondered if there was any advice I could offer Balzaque.  Not that I now consider myself an expert, but maybe I could start a conversation to review this fight.  I looked him up on Zkillboard, as I thought about what I might offer him.  No character found.  Strange…

I accessed his name through my Zkillboard report of the fight.  This fight was his only entry.  I then looked up his character in game…

How many skill injectors does it take to get to the center of an assault frigate?

One ferking day old character!!!!  Piloting a Retribution!!!!  Balzaque, that “makes no sense.”  Hate the player, not the game.

Oops, I Did It Again!

I am now over 100,000 LPs, as I have expanded into medium and large complexes.  I am still defending for my faction.  I have taken to aggressive defense as well.  I have chased off many Caldari and Amar militia from their complexes, and even spent some time hunting after them as they ran to other systems.  My hunting skills need to improved.  I am still amazed at how many people run off. 

Yes, I am a hypocrite!  For a time I engaged in the same strategy.  At least I have come to realize I have a problem, and that is the first step to recovery.  Right?

That little Atron pilot is just a gnat that needs to be swatted.  She just runs, and runs.  Stays in the area, never engages, but I’m sure she’s making a killing with LPs.  A small victory was entering a system, locating her complex, entering, and watching her run.  I saw the button marker had just seconds left!  That explains why she stayed as long as she did.  I was just a moment away from locking her!

After I chased her off that complex, I remained for 10 minutes.  I had an appointment I needed to keep, and only had 10 minutes before I had to log.  I worked off the time she accumulated to capture the complex, but I was not able to capture the complex for LP rewards.  Why did I do that?  Because it makes me feel better making her farming effort a little more difficult.

Anyway, one thing I forgot to mention in my last victory is that I also began to switch up my drone deployment.  I have looked into the types of ships that fly in the area, and I have determined that the warrior drones need to be deployed with two of the hobgoblins.  The explosive damage they spit out serves well against the vulnerabilities of many of the ship types flying through the systems.  I have become pretty good working with drones, with the years of piloting a Dominix through Level 4 missions.  Although PvP stretches my attention thin monitoring the many details in each combat, checking on drones when I’m under attack comes pretty naturally to me.  Also, I’m usually solid about remember to scoop them up again before I fly off.  Usually.

Which brings me to my next victory, and believe me – I’m so surprised by this.

2nd Kill

Gibsen flew into system just after I completed a large complex.  I was orbiting within a small complex at the time, and pinged his Hookbill.  I can’t stress this enough, I was sure this was going to be explosion number two for me.  My drones were deployed, and I prepped my micro warp drive to overheat.  Gibsen is a pirate, with -10 security status and all.  His kill board is filled with victories over militia pilots from all factions.  To his credit, he seems to hunt for 1v1 combat opportunities – I respect this so much.  I believe I am just getting very lucky with these 1v1 fights.

The reason I mention the large complex versus the small is I believe this was my key to winning this fight.  Not only did I have extra moments to prepare as he navigated through the gate, (which the large complex does not have), but I was able to pull significant distance away from his entry point.  Although the warp in point for the large is also defined, the extra moments allowed me to mentally prepare and predict his fit.  I have played this game for a while, but ship fits and abilities do not come naturally to me.  Unless I have flown the ship for a good amount of time, I have to recall from knowledge gained throughout my leisure reading and viewing experience.

Gibsen flew in, we locked each other, and I immediately hit my overheating micro warp drive to orbit at 20 km.  Positive note, I clicked the warp disruptor as the lock was being established.  So, I’m improving there.

I kept 20-22 km distance from Gibsen throughout the combat.  The killmail reassured me that I made the right decision.  If Gibsen got on top of me, his two webifiers would have slowed my Tristan to a crawl, and his rockets would have melted my shields and armor.  Webifiers have a range of 10 km, (I believe 13 km if overheated), so I didn’t want anything to do with that.

From his kill report, I see that Gibsen loaded Scourge Rage Rockets, which deal kinetic damage.  Assuming I do not have any boosts to the Tristan’s weak points, I would have expected Nova Rage Rockets – dealing explosive damage.  Deal damage to known weakness sort of thinking here.  Not that I would have known this at the time, (and it will take me some time and effort to be able to recall this information instantaneously in game).  I had to look up this detail after the fact, as I analyzed the combat.  I’m just wondering what led to his decision to use Scourge over Nova, especially since he carried a good selection of all damage types.  Gibsen has so much more experience at combat than I, so I’m sure there was some thought process.

Another positive note, I was able to shut down my micro warp drive from overheating before it burned out this time.  When I realized the battle was going extremely well for me, I prioritized monitoring our distance from one another.  My shields showed insignificant amount of damage versus his shields were almost finished as my drones continuing to pound away. 

When Gibsen realized he was not going to be able to close the distance, (and probably realized I had no guns mounted), he began to attack my drones.  I saw this early, and I was prepared to begin some drone management here.  Unfortunately, this is where my lack of PvP experience did me wrong.  I recalled one of my warriors a little later than I should, and Gibsen killed it off on it’s return route.  PvP damage is just so much faster than PvE.  No problem for me though, I just deployed a spare hobgoblin, and ordered it to attack.  

Somewhere at this point I believe Gibsen decided that he may want to run off.  I could be wrong, since I am relying on ship distance numbers to tell me that story.  I have the battle field expanded out far, so details like ship orientation forward or away is lost on me at this point.  I know there are ship’s orientation arrows on the expanded field, but again – I’m new to these visuals.  Have patience with me.  Anyway, I was monitoring the distanced between 20-22 km and watching the health status of my drones.  Suddenly I saw Gibsen pulled out to 24 km. 

I clicked to close the distance, and popped on my micro warp drive.  I felt comfortable with this hasty move, since he was well into structure.  I barely had any damage on my shields.  At this point, I’m just concerned about keeping him on the field for the kill.  I lost point on Gibsen just as my drones dealt the final damage, blowing him up.  Hindsight note here: I should have overheated my warp disruptor.  This would have extended the range of the established point, and provided me with more time to close the distance in a controlled, safe manner.

We exchanged “gf” in local, and I scooped up the loot.  I was happy to see the Republic Fleet medium shield extender fall in the loot drop.  Later, I looked on Zkillboard, and was amazed by Gibsen’s experience with PvP.  Truly impressive.  This is where I would like to get more involved in our community.  I just don’t communicate with other pilots as much as I would like.  This is one of my ambitions for this blog.  If any reader would care to provide me comments, advice, or ask questions, I welcome the communication.  I hope to hear from you.

Main carry away for me from this interaction with a Hookbill, my goal to blow up allowed me to follow through with this fight.  If I allowed myself to be selective, I would have ran from any Navy Faction ship – believing  a T1 frigate had no chance.  Already I’m beginning to see how the right circumstances can lead to favorable outcomes.
